Description
The Reading Observation Scale (ROS) is 25-item, norm-referenced rating scale that can be used to assess students' daily classroom reading behaviors. It consists of statements that relate to specific reading behaviors readily seen in instructional settings (e.g., enjoys reading, retells read material correctly"); each statement is rated (by teachers or other educational professionals) on a 5-point scale. The ROS is normed on a nationally stratified sample of 1,338 students in 15 states and has proven reliability and validity (including evidence of sensitivity and specificity). The ROS can be used to:
support a referral, expand the scope of a comprehensive reading evaluation, compare teachers' ratings with test results, help plan interventions, and monitor the effectiveness of nterventions
Administration and Scoring
Usually, only 5 to 10 minutes are required to rate a student's observed reading behaviors. The total score is reported as standard scores and percentile ranks.
